Education

Education opens doors. SRHF believes that every child has a right to quality education and that teachers need to be well trained, supported, and consistently paid in return for the important work they do. We believe that when teachers are valued, students are valued and they will have a better chance for success. In 2019, SRHF changed our educational sponsorship program from one that connects one sponsor to one child, to a system that directly supports teacher and school director training.

This training occurs through a partnership with InnovEd and the Universite Quisqueya (InnovEd-UniQ), providing the main certified schools in Saint Rock with a comprehensive, research-based model of professional development for teachers and school directors. InnovEd-UniQ, who works in close relationship with Haiti’s Ministry of Education, also seeks to innovate and design high-quality educational programs that will equip students with the adequate knowledge, skills, and disposition to be successful contributors to Haitian society.

In addition, this program also directly supports the salaries of teachers and students in five of our most vulnerable schools. In turn, all 5 schools that are part of InnovEd training agree to accept all students into their classrooms regardless of their ability to pay. No child will be left behind.

Starting in 2015, SRHF established a University Scholarship Program through a generous grant from the Flatley Foundation and now we are able to send students to university or vocational training with full financial support. This is a dream previously unreachable for the children of the Saint Rock community and we are thrilled to be able to continue to provide this opportunity into the future.

James Pierre School Development

The ICGS School primary school, fondly known as the James Pierre School, operates in an inadequate space with tarp walls and a tin roof. SRHF is working with Turner Construction and Margulies Perruzzi Architects to build a brand-new building that offers a proper learning environment for a large population of students. Construction began in 2023. An all-Haitian construction crew will complete the project. Please see the photos below for plans for the building.
